‘In recent years there have been many writers who have suggested that ICT, has provided a means for enhancing not just collaborative opportunities, but the collaborative learning process itself in a classroom. ICT has undoubtedly offered numerous practical advantages by allowing users to overcome restrictions of time and place, transcending barriers of textbooks and classroom walls, providing up-to-date resources for teachers and students, supporting a range of individual learning styles, providing authentic contexts for students and broadening the curriculum’.

from this statement we can see the importance of ICT in the classroom, as our children grow technology becomes a greater part of their lives. with technology changing rapidly teachers need to find more interesting and exciting ways of incorporating technology into the primary classroom. while reading the many literature on the internet, i have come to understand the importance of ICT. i have looked at the many ways teachers can incorporate ICT via podcatsing, blogging, webquests and many many more. as a future educator i hope to use some of these mediums.

the internet

February 26th, 2008

i agree with Nivins comments on the internet as it provides us with access to a world of information and resources. We can design activities that tap into current sources/news, far beyond anything a textbook could ever hope to offer.

Imagine all of the worlds learning sources: books, media, museums, universities, governmental agencies, artists, philosophers, leaders mathematicians, scientists and the list goes on. These are all connected to one medium that will and can offers students the tools and information to help them understand the world.

ICT

February 21st, 2008

ICT has the potential to be an effective teaching and learning tool in the classroom, it’s about communicating with others to enhance the learning process as well as allowing for interactive teaching and learning in which students collaborate with other schools.

While viewing this article on Using ICT in the Primary Classroom, it takes us through the issues arising from ICT, with research conducted in England. The article states that teachers must see collaborative learning as a valuable approach to learning, as it enables students to pool knowledge, ideas and skills and to produce a higher quality of work together than they would have produced individually. I believe that being able to connect students to the outside world through collaboration will improve students learning, performance in schools, as well as students and teachers being able to collaborate with a community outside of their school, a global community.

ipods in the classroom

While looking through my BLOGROLL I came across Narelle’s posting on ipods in the classroom, I agree with Narelles’s notion of students sharing classroom experiences with family and friends. I believe parents are invaluable partners in their child’s education and therefore should be encouraged to be involved in the school community. While viewing the video Narelle had posted, I was amazed at how the teachers looked to create better communication with parents by allowing children to take home their projects, as well as the teachers being able to promote what the school is doing through ipods and new technologies. This school is utilizing and sharing technology at all levels and this is good especially in today’s technological world.

blogging

February 19th, 2008

Blogging a new media used in our classrooms as an educational tool is now being used by students as young as six, Blogging is an online diary or journal and as Nivin has pointed out ‘a communication space that teachers can utilize with students”. Children are growing up in front of a global electronic library of billions of pages of information (the Internet), where materials can be published by just about anyone, on just about anything, and for just about any reason (the new literacy). I believe that writing is a core skill in education; and as teachers we can take advantage of this tool to encourage creative writing in the classroom. While serching through the web I came across an article about Clarence Fisher a middle school teacher who is bringing blogging to the classroom, he states that through blogging students are learning that they have a voice. And through that voice can communicate their ideas and knowledge more creatively.

podcasting in our schools

February 18th, 2008

“Aspiring writers and journalists have their blogs, aspiring movie directors have their Apple iMovies, and aspiring DJs/radio producers now have podcasting,” Reinier Evers, the founder of trendwatching.com.

While surfing the Internet on pod casting, one of the new media phenomenon in our schools today. i came across a wide range of literature on this media. This new form of language used in today’s society gives students and teachers the opportunity to have their voices heard through out the world.  Pod casting can be seen as a form of language which has the capacity to allow for communication instantly and universally. I believe podcasting to be an exciting new technology to emerge in our society. While listening to an Interview on ABC Breakfast Radio, Michael an IT teacher who uses podcasting as a tool to better engage students in the classroom, states that this is an exciting way of presenting work and being able to share work complted in school with family or friends. Michael Sates that most students have access to powerful technologies such as phones, ipods etc and through this students can take home what they have created and share with their family, and be proud of what they have achieved.
